Of course climbing to the roof of Africa, the number one World’s free standing mountain is physically challenging.

We normally advise our clients to take a day off, walk around Arusha or Moshi town, cycling if you love to do and swimming in the hotel or visit Chemka natural hot spring or Chala Crater Lake  for post hike recovery and have a fresh start for the best safari experience.

Visiting Chala Crater lake 

After your thrilling adventure of hiking Mount Kilimanjaro, why not treat yourself to a visit to Lake Chala? Just 52 km from Moshi town, this stunning crater lake lies right on the border between Tanzania and Kenya. With a depth of 95 meters, it’s even deeper than Lake Victoria. The lake’s water, currently a vibrant green due to algae, glistens in the sunlight, inviting you to explore its beauty.

Take a leisurely walk down the 100-meter deep crater rim to reach the lakeshore. Here, you can cool your feet in the refreshing water and enjoy the peaceful ripples that dance across the surface. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak in the natural serenity after your mountain climb.

Things to Do at Lake Chala:

  • Explore the Trails: Lake Chala is a fantastic place for a scenic walk. The trails offer beautiful views, and all walks are accompanied by a knowledgeable staff member from Lake Chala Safari Lodge.
  • Bird Watching: Bird lovers will be thrilled by the variety of species in the area, especially the many raptors. Lake Chala is believed to be a significant migration route on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro, so you never know what rare birds you might spot.
  • Kayaking: For a more adventurous experience, you can paddle out onto the lake in a kayak and enjoy the water up close.
  • Climate Considerations: The weather at Lake Chala can vary, with hot days from December to March and cooler mornings and evenings. From May to September, it can get quite chilly, so be sure to bring warm clothing for those early and late hours.

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable walking shoes and possibly a walking stick for the descent to the lake.
  • Binoculars for bird watching, along with sunscreen, a hat, and clothing layers to adjust to temperature changes.
  • A towel if you plan to freshen up with a cold shower after your hike.

Chemka Hot Springs

After hiking, if you opt to visit Chemka Hotsprings on your wat to Arusha before you start a wildlife Safaris, your driver guide will pick you up from the Hotel in Moshi to Chemka natural hot spring. It is about 1 hour drive from Moshi to Chemka hot spring which is along the way to Arusha.

Spend a relaxing half a day in the natural hot springs hidden in the jungle! Enjoy picnic on the shore of hot springs with hot lunch box or barbecue.

After a half day of relaxation, we drive to Arusha a – 1 hour drive to your hotel where you will have a good sleep waiting to start your Wildlife Safari or flyback home if you will not a wildlife safari after hiking Mount Kilimanjaro.
